Overberg Geoscientists Group
Local Geological Map
The simplified geology map of the area covering the onshore west and south coast, between Elands Bay, Cape Town, Hermanus, Mossel Bay and Gqberha, was compiled from numerous resources as listed. The geology of the area is shown at supergroup and group levels, as any subdivision into formation level was not feasible for a map of this scale. For example, the Table Mountain Group is made up of a subgroup and eight formations.
Shown are rocks as old as 1.1 billion years ago (southern part of the Namakwa Metamorphic Province) to the Present Day (Cenozoic Sediments). The latter can be divided into the Sandveld Group (Western Cape), the Bredasdorp Group (Southern Cape) and the Algoa Group (Eastern Cape).
